Mexican or Texas food?

The first mentions of Chili con carne can be found in the writings of the Franciscan monk Bernardino de Sahagún from 1529. They write about stewed meat spiced with chili, which was eaten in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán.

Other sources rely on the legend that the Jumano Indians came from the desert to South Texas. They claimed that the Lady in Blue appeared to them and urged them to embrace the Christian faith. She also revealed to them the recipe for the fiery soup. It was a combination of meat, chili peppers and beans.

But chilli con carne was condemned by Spanish priests because of this story. They called it the devil’s soup and banned its consumption.

Forbidden fruit, however, tastes best, and spicy stewed beef was gaining more and more popularity. It was quick, cheap and very tasty.

Today Chili con carne is spread all over the world, has several different variations and is the national dish of Texas.
