Where did this chocolate treat come from?
Brownies originate from the USA and are the most popular American dessert. It is considered more like a biscuit – it is eaten with your hands and not with a fork like a classic cake or pie, and there are many legends about its origin.
Some claim that the cook accidentally added a batch of chocolate to the cookie dough. Others say that, on the contrary, he wanted to make a cake, but he did not have enough flour. Or would you rather like the story of the woman who forgot to add baking powder to the cake? When it didn’t rise as it should, she cut it open and served her guests flat, square-shaped desserts with a taste that everyone fell in love with.
The official version talks about Berta Palmer, the wife of a wealthy Chicago businessman, who received the Hotel Palmer House as a wedding gift from her husband. In 1893, a fair was held here, for which Berta wanted to prepare a special dessert.
Its uniqueness was to fit into the boxes that visitors to the fair received as favors. The hotel’s pastry chef prepared a thick chocolate bar, sprinkled with nuts and topped with an apricot glaze. It was something completely new and unique, and the candy was a huge success.
American brownies are often served with a glass of milk. But they are great, for example, with whipped cream, sugared or warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Are you salivating? So simply try it.
