Why eat citrus?

Lemons, limes, grapefruits and oranges are high in phyto-nutrients such as carotenoids, flavonoids and polyphenols.

These nutrients are types of antioxidants and give fruits their bright colors and strong aromas. They can also help protect your body and prevent many health problems.

Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, a nutrient known to help boost your immune system. It encourages your immune system to produce white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections.

Contrary to popular belief, the vitamin C in citrus fruits cannot prevent colds. However, research suggests that it can help reduce the length and severity of colds.

A 2014 study found that people with low levels of citrate in their urine were more likely to develop kidney stones. Citrus fruits can increase citrate levels, which can help reduce this risk.

Their soluble fiber and flavonoids can help raise healthy HDL cholesterol and lower harmful LDL cholesterol.

They are also rich in potassium, which can help reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease.

The flavonoids found in citrus fruits can help fight chronic inflammation, which is partially responsible for the development of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

How to choose quality citrus?

When buying citrus fruits, look for ones that are heavy for their size. Choose those with a fine-grained, firm skin. Avoid fruits that are too soft and those that show signs of developing mold.

Fresh citrus fruits can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They usually last about a week at room temperature and several weeks in the refrigerator. To keep them fresh, don’t wash them until you want to eat them.
