How are crab sticks made?

Crab sticks are imitation crab meat that has been pressed into a stick shape and often dyed red.

This type of meat is often more affordable for use in seafood salads and similar dishes, and because it is cooked during processing, it can be eaten without further preparation.

Some types of sushi, such as California rolls, are also typically made using imitation crabmeat, often from crab sticks.

Generally, these bars are made from fish meat which has a mild flavor and can be easily added with artificial or natural crab flavor.
Sticks are typically modified with the addition of other ingredients such as binders, egg whites, and then shaped to hold the meat together in a round or rectangular stick shape. Crab flavoring is often added to this mixture. Once the crab sticks are assembled and seasoned, they are often dipped in a dye bath to dye the outside red or orange to resemble a crab’s shell.
