Easter traditions in the world

Fly a kite
Celebrating Easter on the beautiful British island of Bermuda, people flock to Horseshoe Bay Beach to display and fly their home-made kites, often with bold, brightly colored, geometric designs. There are many categories to compete in, including Best Traditional Bermuda Kite, Most Innovative Design and more.

Production of colored carpets
Antigua, in southern Guatemala, covers its streets with colorful carpets throughout Easter week in preparation for the Good Friday parade. Long carpets are made of flowers, colored sawdust, fruit, vegetables and sand.

Fireworks
In Florence, Italy, locals celebrate a 350-year-old Easter tradition known as the Scoppio del Carro, or “carriage explosion.” People in colorful 15th-century costumes lead a decorated carriage filled with pyrotechnics through the streets of the city before stopping in front of the Duomo. During the Easter Mass, the Archbishop of Florence then lights the fuse that leads to the cart and ignites the fireworks, which is supposed to ensure a good harvest.

Costumes
Small children in Finland – especially girls – traditionally dress up as Easter witches and wear colorful clothes with freckles painted on their faces. On Palm Sunday in Eastern Finland and White Saturday in Western Finland, little witches go door to door with bundles of willow twigs decorated with colorful feathers and crepe paper. A rhyming blessing is recited to ward off evil spirits, and children are often given a chocolate egg in return.

Throwing water
On the morning of Holy Saturday, the Greek island of Corfu hosts a traditional “pot throwing”. People throw pots, pans and other earthenware, often filled with water, out of windows and break them on the street. Some say this custom comes from the Venetians who threw out all their old stuff on New Year’s. Others believe that throwing pots welcomes spring, symbolizing new crops to be gathered in new pots.
