The history of the egg salad recipe

The first mention of this popular salad appeared in a German cookbook in 1805.

Today’s form differs in many ways from the first one. The first versions contained, for example, wine, vinegar, mint, anchovies, anchovies, olives or salami. Instead of the mayonnaise used today, a dressing of vinegar, wine curd, oil, salt and pepper was used.

When, 30 years later, the recipe reached our Czech meadows and groves, boiled egg yolk, bay leaf and onion were added to the dressing.

In the twentieth century, the salad recipe still contains fish, but this was later replaced by more affordable ingredients such as potatoes.

The traditional Czech version of the egg salad we know today was introduced to the market by gourmet Alois Linka. He added apples, canned peas, pickles, carrots, Prague ham, mayonnaise, salt and pepper to the recipe.

The recipe of the salad has gone through a number of changes and as we can see, practically nothing is left of the original recipe, yet the vlasák has become one of the most popular delicacies in our country!
