This homemade Baileys recipe uses Irish whiskey. It is important to follow this procedure and not reach for another type. This is because individual types of whiskey differ not only in their production, but also in the ingredients they contain, thus also in their taste.
Below you can read the individual differences between the different types of whiskey that are produced:
- Scotch whiskey – must be produced on the territory of Scotland in a Scottish distillery. It is made from water and malted barley. It is further fermented, while other types of cereal grains can be added. A liquid that has less than 94.8% alcohol is used for distillation. Aged for at least 3 years in oak barrels. Scotch whiskey must be at least 40% alcohol.
- Irish whiskey – is always made in Ireland. It goes through the distillation process three times. Grain is soaked in spring water. There should be no peat aftertaste in Irish whiskey. It is stored in oak barrels for 3 years.
- American whiskey – is most often distilled from corn. Another well-known distillate is Bourbon, which is a type of whiskey that is also distilled from corn, with a minimum content of 51% corn. It is stored in oak barrels, which give it a woody taste.
- Canadian whiskey – is produced from several types of cereals. Basic distilled whiskey contains more than 50% corn and then other grains. Canadian whiskey is aged for at least 4 years and must be distilled on Canadian territory.
