Kotrč is a rarity among mushrooms

It can be said that this mushroom is really highly valued and mushroom lovers sing its praises. It is very healthy and, with the right preparation, very tasty. It should be noted that our ancestors were already fond of the kotrč. It is even said to be a popular mushroom in the 19th century, which regularly appeared in the markets.

From a general point of view, it belongs to the genus of mushrooms. It looks a bit like a bush and a sea sponge in one. There are 3 so far documented species on our territory.

  1. Sparassiscrispa – it is the most common and abundant species that parasitizes pine trees.
  2. Sparassisnemeci – a rare species parasitizing fir trees.
  3. Sparassislaminosa – this is also very rare and can be found on oaks.

What are the popular names of this mushroom?

  • Ram balls
  • Ramenice
  • Lamb
  • White basket
  • Pine log
  • You’re amazing
  • Pile
  • Koteryh
  • A scoundrel
  • A bummer
  • Roeshnik

Curly cat

If you like to go mushroom hunting, you should also start paying attention to the appearance of the curly-headed boletus in the woods from the end of July to November. If we take it lightly, it is actually a Lamborghini or a Ferrari among mushrooms. Thanks to its size, you can’t mistake it for a poisonous mushroom. Parasitic on pine roots.

Foresters don’t like them very much, because they cause unpleasant rot in the pines. Once you find a rook on a pine tree, be sure to remember it well, because it is highly likely that you will find it there again after some time. In addition to the large fruiting body, it is common for it to grow in the same places several years in a row.

If its appearance discourages you, then it is definitely a mistake, because it also has many positive effects on our health. It is an important medicine that is especially proud of its antibacterial effects and has a very positive effect on the skin. It is even said to heal various wounds. At the same time, it also contains betaglucan 1,3-D (SCG), a substance with anti-cancer effects.

Where exactly to look for a rookery in the forest and how to recognize it?

As mentioned several times, it is found on the roots of pine trees. However, this is not the rule, because we often find it on individual trees, but growing straight from the ground, where the wood had already been decomposed.

Pine stumps are no exception. Be careful not to confuse the curly haired curler with the German or scaly haired curler. They are parasitic on the roots of spruces, firs, oaks and beeches, but their collection is strictly prohibited, as they are among the endangered mushroom species.

How to simply describe this excellent mushroom?

At first glance, the curly-headed catfish resembles a sheep, although it also somewhat resembles a cauliflower or a sea sponge. Many even claim that they see a human brain when they look at the cage.

The mushroom changes its color gradually with age. It starts out as a pale yellow-white and turns to ocher brown. The tastiest are definitely the creamy whitish fruits.

Interesting facts at the end

In our article, you may have come across several foreign language names that are not exactly common in our gastronomy. Let’s take a brief look at them and see what they actually mean.

It is a spice that is characteristic of Asian cuisine. At first glance, its appearance reminds us of ginger or turmeric, with which it is even related.

After all, in our country it is called Siamese ginger, calcan or galgan. It has a great and very distinct taste, and it also has beneficial effects on our organism.

How is it used?

Like turmeric, galangal can be used alone, but it can also be combined with a mixture of other spices. Compared to the pungency of ginger, this spice stands out with its sweet citrus taste. The root is slightly harder than ginger, so it is ideal to slice it very thinly.

It fits perfectly in Thai dishes, where it is seconded by coconut milk, beef and vegetables. It has a very positive effect on digestion, dilates blood vessels, has a minor analgesic effect and was even referred to as an aphrodisiac in earlier times.
