Spring nettle detox smoothie

What will we need

  • 1 large handful of nettles
  • 1 handful of dandelion leaves
  • 1 apple
  • 1 banana
  • 1 avocado
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Water as needed

Method

  • Chop the nettles and dandelion leaves into smaller pieces.
  • Place in a blender together with the chopped apple, banana and avocado, sprinkle with lime juice and blend until smooth.
  • Dilute with water as needed.

If the smoothie is too sweet, add a banana or a little honey.

Nettle smoothie drink with pineapple

What will we need

  • 2 handfuls of nettle leaves
  • 1 banana
  • ¼ pineapple
  • 100 ml of coconut milk
  • ¼ cucumber
  • ½ avocado

Method

  • Wash the nettle leaves thoroughly, preferably with gloves, and chop finely.
  • Place in a blender along with chopped pineapple, banana, avocado and cucumber and add coconut milk.
  • Blend until smooth, if necessary add a little water.

Nettle smoothie with wild berries

You can pick seasonal forest fruits in the forest and go to the meadow for nettles. A smoothie made from almost purely hand-picked ingredients will taste even better.

What will we need

  • 1 large handful of nettles
  • 220 g of forest fruit (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, wild strawberries…)
  • 200 ml of almond milk
  • Juice of 1 lemon or lime
  • 1 scraped vanilla pod

Method

  • Place all ingredients in a blender and blend for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Pour the smoothie into glasses and garnish with the remaining berries.

In winter, you can use dried nettles and frozen fruit. This way you can prepare a smoothie drink from dried nettles and frozen fruit.

Health effects of nettle

Nettle leaves and root provide a wide range of nutrients:

  • Vitamins A, C and K, as well as several B vitamins
  • calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium
  • linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid
  • All essential amino acids
  • beta-carotene, lutein, luteoxanthin and other carotenoids
  • What’s more, many of these nutrients act as antioxidants in your body.

High blood pressure is a serious health problem because it puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Stinging nettle has traditionally been used to treat high blood pressure.

This plant contains compounds that can mimic the effects of insulin. In a three-month study, taking 500 mg of nettle extract three times a day significantly reduced blood sugar levels compared to a placebo.
