Chukchi blueberries

Sometimes called Honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea). They didn’t get this nickname just by chance. They can withstand temperatures down to around -47 °C.

The shrub grows to a height of 1.5 – 2 m. It has oval leaves, yellowish-white frost-resistant flowers and blue berries. Edible berries average 1 cm¹⁹ and weigh 1.3 – 2.2 grams.

Chukchi blueberries are harvested at the turn of spring and summer. Berries ready for harvest are dark purple or blue inside.

You can process them into jams, juices, ice creams or yogurts.

Canadian blueberries

Called Vaccinium corymbosum in Latin. It is one of the most common varieties of blueberries that can be found in stores. Their largest producer is Canada, producing approximately 40% of world production.

The bushes grow to a height of 1.8 – 3.7 m. They have dark green glossy leaves, which turn red, orange or yellow in autumn. Their flowers are white, sometimes light pink and have a bell shape.

The blue-black fruit is juicy, sweet and large with a diameter of 6.4 to 12.7 mm. Thanks to their sweet taste, they are highly sought after for consumption. Canadian blueberries need acidic soil, the pH of the soil should be between 4.5 and 5.5. If your soil is not acidic enough, add finely ground sulfur or aluminum sulfate. Specially mixed fertilizers for Canadian blueberries are also sold and can be found at any gardening store.

When to plant Canadian blueberries? It depends on the variety. Some are better planted in spring, others in early summer.

  1. Wash the blueberries thoroughly and let them drain on a sieve.
  2. Wash and dry the jars and lids thoroughly.
  3. Fill glasses with blueberries.
  4. Heat water in a saucepan, add sugar and lemon juice. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  5. When the mixture boils, let it bubble for a while and remove from the heat.
  6. The mixture must cool, at least 5 minutes.
  7. Pour over the blueberries and seal the jars tightly.
  8. Pour half of the water into a large pot and bring to a boil.
  9. Place the jars in the boiling water, cover with a lid and cook for 15 minutes.
