Chervil is a tender leafy herb sometimes called French parsley. There is a good reason for this, as it was originally used mainly in French cuisine.

Not only chervil is important for French cuisine, but also tarragon, parsley and chives.

It originates from the Caucasus region of Eastern Europe, but it can be grown anywhere. In a moment we will see how you can grow it at home.

Chervil is often mistaken for parsley because it looks similar.

The texture and taste of the herb are very delicate. When you need a milder and less pronounced flavor in your dishes, you can use this herb instead of tarragon, fennel or parsley.

What does chervil taste like?

You can reliably distinguish chervil from other herbs by its soft and curly leaves. They may resemble carrots a bit. It is always light green in color. It looks like parsley, but it has a much darker color.

Using kerblik in the kitchen

In general, you have four options for using the kerblik in the kitchen. It is about:

  • herbal mixture,
  • sky,
  • spice,
  • sauce.

Chervil is a classic French herb that naturally belongs to a traditional herb mixture. You can use this mixture as a seasoning for dishes, for grilling meat or fish, but also in vegetable or pasta salads.

Thanks to its mild taste, you can also use it as a garnish for dishes. In its raw state, you can add it to soup or to meat at the end of cooking.

You can use the herb itself as a spice during cooking. It will work perfectly with meat poultry, potatoes or egg dishes. But the possibilities are countless.

You can also easily add chervil to sauces, soft cheeses or to flavor butter. In this way, you complement the taste of dishes with a very delicate product.

Recipes with chervil

Most often, chervil is added to soups for flavoring, or to French-style omelets. But you can also revive it with herbal oil, which needs to be infused for 2-3 weeks and then filtered through a fine cloth.

Herb pesto will be an excellent addition to meat or salads. But you can also enjoy grilled salmon or fish fillet with herbs.

From soups, you can try one of the recipes for semolina soups or even Easter soups , which are suitable for the table all year round.

The classic French béarnaise sauce is a combination of butter, egg yolk and wine vinegar with chervil and tarragon.

But you can also use this herb to liven up mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes or butter.

Cultivation of chervil

The chervil can be a bit demanding on heat and light, but you can grow it fairly easily. In addition, you can plant it throughout the year.

You can plant it from seed and it will grow easily in a sunny place. It will do best in the sun or semi-shade. Complete shade of the herb will not do well.

The soil should be loamy, permeable, rich in organic matter with an acidity of 6 to 6.7 pH.

Plant about 6 weeks before the last frost. In our conditions, you can grow it from spring to the end of autumn.

You can plant and grow in the garden in a flower bed, but also in a flower pot. In the case of a pot, always sow in the container in which the plant will remain. Not suitable for transplanting.

You can grow chervil from seeds and seedlings, which you can buy at the market or in the garden.

The harvest of chervil

Always pick the leaves when they are young and soft. Over time, they darken and lose their flavor. Harvest it gradually as you need it.

You can use it fresh, but it can also be dried or frozen in water (in ice molds). But you can also preserve it in white vinegar.

Health benefits of chervil

According to scientists, chervil has a high content of antioxidants. For this reason, it has a positive effect against free radicals, oxidative stress or cell damage.

Oxidative stress has a major impact on the development of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, Parkinson’s disease and eye diseases.

You can use chervil to treat or prevent diseases such as:

  • cough,
  • digestive problems
  • eczema,
  • gout,
  • upper respiratory tract infection,
  • kidney stones,

You can buy it in a store, but of course growing it at home is much better. It is not complicated and you can grow the herb in the garden, balcony, terrace or on the windowsill in a pot.
