About Hungarian cuisine
It is impossible to describe Hungarian cuisine in one word.
Typical spices for Hungarian cuisine are paprika, black pepper and lots and lots of onions. But its cuisine is generally very diverse. Come and see under the hood of Hungarian cuisine with us!
Traditional Hungarian meals are mainly based on meat, seasonal vegetables, fresh pastries, dairy products, cheeses and fruits.
In Hungary, a typical breakfast may consist of fresh bread, sausages, salami, seasonal vegetables and homemade jam.
Hungarians like to say that they are a “soup nation” . While soups are considered an appetizer in many countries, for Hungarians it is traditionally the case that if you haven’t had a bowl of soup, you haven’t eaten yet.
Hungarians distinguish between light soups, which they consume as a starter, and then, in a typical lunch, two more courses and hearty soups with meat and pasta follow.
Among the hearty soups we can include the iconic goulash and fish soups , which are prepared in countless variations both in restaurants and at home.
There are two main and most famous Hungarian fish soups – Baja and Szeged .
While Baja fish soup is traditionally made from carp, Szeged fish soup is made from different types of fish.
Another Hungarian specialty is the sweet cold fruit soup gyümölks .
But in any case, soups often reflect the seasons and therefore contain seasonal vegetables, fruits, but also meat or fish, according to the current hunting or fishing season.
If you prefer sweet foods, try the Hungarian Dobos cake. Chocolate butter-cream layered sponge cake, topped with caramel and covered with nuts on the edges.
Or try the incredibly popular Túró Rudi . A chocolate bar made of dark chocolate filled with sweetened cottage cheese or other flavors, such as jelly.
Desserts often contain various fruits or jams, as Hungary also has internationally renowned vineyards and orchards full of apples, pears, plums and other fruits.
