Simply put, it’s an alcoholic drink that’s distilled from molasses, or from sugarcane juice. The majority of its producers are in areas with sugar cane. It is easy to find rum from Australia, India or the Caribbean. Home is the Antilles and their specific type of rum.
From a general point of view, rums are distinguished according to color, aging and production, or even Spanish, English and French. Spanish ones typically have a sweeter taste, full of vanilla and are made from molasses. The main producers are Cuba, Panama, the Dominican Republic and South America.
In contrast, English rums have their origin in those countries where colonization took place earlier, i.e. in Jamaica, Barbados or perhaps Trinidad. They taste a bit harsh and have a much higher alcohol content, with a more whiskey-like finish.
The last French rums are of high quality, their taste is perfectly pure to the point of cognac. It is produced in Martinique, Reunion or Guadeloupe.
Light/white rums
As we know, the color of rum depends on how long it spends in the barrels where it matures. The white variant is in the barrels for a very short time, so it does not acquire its characteristic dark color and remains light/white. It is a very young rum with a distinct refreshing taste. They are mostly used as part of various mixed drinks/cocktails.
Golden rums
They remind us of the color of amber. They are classic rums aged in quality burnt oak barrels. The color is much darker, the liquid more mature and the taste perfectly balanced. Apart from drinks, they can be drunk straight.
Dark rums
As their name suggests, they lie in the barrel for the longest time. This means that they will have the most distinctive and rich taste.
The greatest maturity goes hand in hand with quality. In most cases, the base is formed or built up using caramel or molasses. This makes them perfectly dark and best enjoyed completely neat.
