What wine to serve with shrimp?
Prawns are served all over the world in seemingly endless variations, from Thai to part of the infamous seafood pizza. This unpretentious mollusc is as versatile as chicken and just as popular both fried and sautéed in a rich buttery sauce.
The list of shrimp varieties is almost endless. It’s no wonder, then, that pairing shrimp and wine can be challenging even for wine lovers.
Consider the saltiness of the shrimp. The more salty, the less dry the wine should be for better balance.
Consider the region. Not surprisingly, wines that come from the same region as the shrimp often pair perfectly.
Consider the season. Prawns are so versatile that they are used all year round in both light summer dishes and hearty winter stews.
Wine and shrimp pairing suggestions
Shrimp cocktail
Consider a dry Riesling that will play well with the horseradish component of the cocktail sauce.
Prawns wrapped in bacon
An oaky white Chardonnay goes well with this dish, helping to balance out all that delicious yet thirst-inducing salt.
Chinese dumplings
A safe bet is Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris. However, don’t be afraid to reach for the interesting Tramín Gewurz.
Grilled shrimp
A hearty Chardonnay is a promising choice. Depending on the intensity of the flavor of the barbecue sauce on the shrimp, a well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon can also be a good choice.
Shrimp soup
If it is a slightly spicy soup, serve Pinot Noir. For intense spiciness, try Viognier.
