The exact geographical origin of speck is still unknown to us. It is for this reason that different regions claim this dish.

The tradition of making spečli can be traced back to the 18th century in the Swabian-Alemannic region, where spelled was widely cultivated. Due to the high gluten content that spelled contains, this dish could also be prepared without eggs.

With industrialization, this dish moved from a common dish that was part of the diet of an ordinary citizen to the level of a culinary specialty.

Today, pasta is known and considered a Swabian specialty and is generally associated with the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The total estimated annual commercial production of peppercorns in Germany is approximately 40,000 tons.
