Why do we bake Christmas cookies?
Like many Christmas traditions, baking Christmas cookies has its roots in the solstice rituals of ancient times.
In the 10th and 11th centuries, winter solstice holidays were indeed celebrated all over the world from Norway to Africa, Ireland and even as far as India.
Most of the ancient rituals revolved around food – gathering, sorting, storing and even feasting, as winter was considered a season of hunger.
So people gathered to prepare their pantries for winter and share the fruits of the last harvest with the community.
With the advent of exploration and trade routes between East and West, spices and fruits made their way into European kitchens and homes. Nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and fruits like apricots and dates made their way to the kitchen table.
Desserts flavored with these new ingredients are becoming popular, adding sweetness and texture to the dessert tray. But only on the most important holidays could families afford such goodies, which was often only at Christmas.
In times when most families were not so well off, people started making candy and sweets as a way to give gifts to their loved ones during Christmas. Because in the old days, giving gifts didn’t mean going out and buying things like it does today. In fact, the gifts were mostly sweets or handmade products.
Candy was made in large quantities and stored away as a way to share the spirit of Christmas with all who visited the family.
Although the tradition of baking cookies has come a long way since the Middle Ages, some things have not changed. Many Christmas cookies are still heavily spiced. Traditional Christmas flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are still used as they were years ago.
