What will we need
- 1 kg sweet potatoes (about 3 large ones)
- 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- Spice Combination: Chili Powder, Smoked Paprika, Chinese Five Spice Blend, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Garam Masala, Cajun Spice, etc.
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C.
- Place a baking tray or baking trays in the oven to preheat.
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut off the ends.
- Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise and then crosswise if they are very long.
- Place the sweet potatoes in a large bowl and add the oil. Mix well to combine.
- Sprinkle with salt and spices of your choice. Mix well with your hands to coat all the pieces in the oil and spices.
- Remove the preheated baking sheet from the oven. Carefully spread the sweet potatoes in a single layer on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 15 to 25 minutes.
- After the first 10 minutes, remove the baking sheet from the oven and use tongs to turn all the sweet potato pieces.
- Return to the oven and bake for another 5 to 15 minutes, or until browned.
- The baking time depends on the oven temperature and the size of the slices.
The browner they get, the crispier they get, but there’s a fine line between browned and burnt that’s inedible. Even if they get really dark, they should still be good because the sweet potatoes caramelize the natural sugars. So watch closely.

Pan-baked sweet potato fries
These sweet potato fries are perfectly crispy, just like you would get at a restaurant! In this recipe, we will fry the sweet fries to golden brown perfection. Serve fries with grilled meat or sandwiches.
What will we need
- 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes
- 80 g cornstarch
- 600 ml of vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 3/4 teaspoon pepper
- chopped parsley for garnish
Method
- Wash and peel the sweet potatoes.
- Cut the sweet potatoes into sticks.
- Rinse the sweet potatoes twice in cold water.
- Boil the fries in water for 4 minutes until they are soft. Remove the fries and place them in an ice bath.
- Prepare the batter for the fries by mixing the cornstarch with an equal amount of water in a bowl.
- Season the dough with 2 teaspoons of salt and 3/4 teaspoon of pepper.
- Dip the fries in the batter and let them rest on a paper towel for 2 minutes.
- Heat a pot with vegetable oil.
- Fry the sweet potato fries in batches of 7-15 depending on the size of your pot.
- Fry the fries for 5-7 minutes until golden.
- When the fries are done, place them in a single layer on paper towels to drain.
- Season with additional salt and pepper to taste and serve hot and crispy. Add parsley if desired.
