Types of rice and where to use them?
Rice is the basis of almost every kitchen, and with so many different types, it is suitable for an unlimited number of recipes. However, the same type of rice goes well with every recipe you make, so think carefully about the type of rice you choose.
Substituting one type of rice for another can really change the resulting recipe, and not always for the better. Each type of rice has its own flavor, texture and unique characteristics that work well in different cooking methods.
So how to choose the right one? You will read about it in the following lines.
Length and shape
Rice is often characterized by its grain length and grain shape. That is why we divide it into 3 categories: long-grain, medium-grain or short-grain rice. Simply put, long grain rice will have a longer cylindrical shape, while short grain rice will be shorter and wider.
Long grain rice
This rice has grains that are three to four times longer than they are wide. Thanks to their composition with a high starch content, the grains separate well from each other when cooked, and are light and fluffy.
Medium grain rice
Compared to long grain rice, medium grain rice is shorter and wider. Because cooked grains are more fragile than long-grain rice, this rice has a greater tendency to stick together.
Short grain rice
With grains that are less than twice as long as they are wide, this rice is short and best for sushi. It has a sticky texture when cooked.
Second
Sticky rice
Glutinous rice, also known as sweet rice, is mainly grown in Southeast and East Asia and is used in many traditional Asian dishes, desserts and sweets. Rice becomes very sticky when cooked and is often ground into rice flour.
Brown rice
This healthy rice retains its natural and characteristic brown color even during the harvest season. Although brown rice takes a little longer to cook than white rice, it’s worth the wait because it’s rich in nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and it’s a 100% whole grain food. Brown rice grains have a chewy texture when cooked. They add a pleasant, slightly nutty flavor to any dish. It is a versatile rice that goes well with stuffed peppers, sauces, fried foods, or in rice pilaf.
Black rice
Known as black rice, this highly nutritious rice has a mild nutty flavor. It is slightly sticky when cooked and is used in a variety of Chinese or Thai dishes, including Chinese black rice cake and mango sticky rice. Mix it with white rice to create a unique two-tone rice pilaf or rice bowl
Wild rice
Wild rice grains are harvested from grasses of the Zizania genus. Wild rice with a high protein content adds a colorful, exotic touch to any rice dish.
Serve it with French fries, mushroom soups or any Indian dish.
Basmati rice
Basmati rice is a type of long-grain rice that is popular in Indian and Asian cuisine. Cooked basmati rice adds a subtle nutty or popcorn flavor and aroma to dishes.
When cooked, the rice grains are long, dry and separated. Serve it alone or with fresh herbs, green onions, coconut or vegetables like a typical pilaf.
Jasmine rice
Jasmine rice, sometimes known as Thai fragrant rice, is a type of long grain rice with a long kernel and a slightly sticky texture when cooked. Use it if you want your food to be lightly scented with jasmine.
Jasmine rice is grown in Thailand, and thanks to this, it brings an exotic twist to every dish. Use it in a variety of traditional Asian dishes, including curries and stir-fries. The moist, soft texture is ideal for soaking up spices and flavors.
Arborio
Arborio rice is a medium grain rice that is wider in size and has a characteristic white dot in the center of the grain. It is named after the town of Arborio in Italy where it is grown.
Due to its high starch content, Arborio rice has a slightly chewy and sticky consistency, creates a creamy texture when cooked and is ideal for dishes such as risotto, rice puddings and soups.
White rice
Due to its starchy composition, white long-grain rice has a slightly sticky consistency that is suitable for stuffings, sauces and fried dishes.
It is probably the most well-known and easily recognized rice in traditional recipes, but it is also popular in Asian and Mexican cuisine. Compared to other varieties of rice, it has a mild flavor and a light and fluffy texture when cooked.
Why wash rice?
To ensure that your rice has a great texture and to remove any pesticides that may be stuck to the grain, it is best to wash the rice before cooking. Rinsing the rice also gets rid of excess starch, which can cause mischief during cooking.
