Yeast is far from just baking

With the term yeast or yeast, we most often associate one of our basic foods – bread. Yeast contains the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which has the ability to convert sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Thanks to this, the dough will rise.

However, baking is far from the only area of human activity in which yeast is used. They also play an important role in winemaking, they are also added to animal feed, and food yeast is also added to various products to enhance their taste or aroma.

Most of us know mainly two forms of yeast – fresh and dried. However, yeast is produced in many different forms. A cube of fresh yeast is actually pressed yeast, the form of small balls is typical for active dry yeast, the main advantage of which is that it is resistant to heat.

In industrial bakeries, granulated or liquid yeast is also used, and frozen yeast with a low water content is used to prepare deep-frozen pastries.

Why include yeast spreads in your diet?

Recipes for yeast spreads are a very easy way to include fresh yeast in our diet. Thanks to the special biochemical properties of yeast, it benefits not only our health, but also our beauty.

It is rich in many types of amino acids, it contains a large amount of vitamins of the B group, especially B1, B2 and B3, and from minerals it contains a large amount of chromium. Yeast is mixed with onions, eggs, herbs and spices in the vast majority of recipes for yeast spreads.

But there are no limits to imagination, and yeast spreads can also be revived by adding mushrooms or vegetables.

How to properly select and store yeast?

Most recipes for yeast spreads are made with fresh yeast. Therefore, in order to be as satisfied as possible with the result, it is important to be able to choose and store it well. Fresh yeast is sold chilled and packaged in the form of small cubes.

When buying, always check not only the expiration date, but also the quality of the packaging. Correct fresh yeast has a light cream color, a pleasant smell and is easy to crumble or break.

Its storage is very important, run home as quickly as possible with the purchase and immediately put the yeast in the refrigerator. The optimal temperature for storage is around 5 °C, high temperatures or changing temperatures will invalidate it.
